EEG (Electroencephalagram)

An EEG, or Electroencephalogram, is a diagnostic test, which detects electrical impulses in the brain and records them into a computer for the physician's interpretation. It is easy, safe and painless.
Primarily, an EEG is performed to determine the presence of epilepsy (seizure disorder) although it is also performed to evaluate other conditions such as lesions, abscesses and to follow up on head injuries. Your primary care provider will determine if an EEG will assist in making a diagnosis for your problem. If an EEG is scheduled for you, the nursing staff will give you necessary information to prepare for the exam.
The Olean Medical Group offers both routine and 24 hour EEG studies.
24 hour Ambulatory EEG is a monitoring of the electrical impulses in your brain. Our system allows you to be monitored in the comfort of your own home, going about your daily activity. While at home, you will wear a recorder around your waist. You will have electrodes glued down to your scalp. You may need to take time off work or stay home from school for this test; discuss this with the technician.
