EMG and NCS

EMG (electromyography) and NCS (nerve conduction studies) are special tests performed to detect neuromuscular disorders (nerve and muscle problems).
EMG measures the electrical activity of muscles. NCS measures the speed and intensity of electrical signals that travel along nerves and the time it takes muscles to respond to these signals. These tests can help detect the cause of problems such as muscle weakness, numbness, spasms, paralysis or pain. They can also determine if the problem involves the nerves, muscles, spinal cord or brain.
Your healthcare provider will determine if these exams will be beneficial in diagnosing your problem.
The Olean Medical Group offers these procedures in the Neurology Department and in the physical therapy department. If you are scheduled for these tests, the nursing staff will give you information necessary to prepare for them.
