Lumbar Puncture

For a lumbar pucture (also called a spinal tap), a needle is inserted into the spinal canal to obtain samples of fluid that narurally surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The pressure of the fluid can be measured and samples are collected to be analyzed for color, blood cell counts, protein, glucose and other substances. A sample of the fluid can also be analyzed for infectious organisms.
The results of the analysis can aid in the diagnosis of many different diseases, ranging from infections, inflammations, cancers and multiple sclerosis. Your primary care provider can determine if a lumbar puncture will assist in the diagnosis of your problem.
The Olean Medical Group offers lumbar puncture in the Neurolgy Department. If you are scheduled for this prodedure, the nursing staff will give you information to prepare for it.
