Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)

Vagus Nerve Stimulation is an alternative option to treatment of patients with known seizure disorders. Patients who are candidates for this form of treatment are ones who do not respond well to conventional therapy (use of multiple anti-epileptic medications). Despite oral medications, they continue to have frequent seizures which alter their daily quality of life.
VNS is a surgically implanted device which stimulates the vagus nerve. This in turn decreases the frequency/severity of the seizures. Your Neurologist will determine if your seizure disorder would benefit from the implantation of a VNS. If he feels this is a good option for you, thorough education of the product, procedure and use will be done in advance of the procedure.
The Olean Medical Group offers Vagus Nerve Stimulation in our Neurology Department.
